The vines and olives groves of the Farm at Sammontana are situated along a hill that borders the valley of the river Arno, in the community of Montelupo, Florence, about 20 kilometers south west of Florence. The seat of the company with the adjacent small, romanesque church, built in the 12th century was at one time the property of the Medici family, then princes of Florence. The property was donated to the canons of San Lorenzo in Florence, who at the times and for many years thereafter enjoied the protection and benevolence of the Medici dynasty. The canons used the property as a place of rest and retirement, but carried out the realization of the spacious, underground cantinas and in the adjacent property erected a majestic furnace with arces overhead, assigned to the production of dishes and various terracotta materials. In 1870, the principal building, with united church, the furnace, and the entire agricultural property was acquired by a nobleman from Poland, Michele Dzieduszycki, who at the time resided at the imperial Court of Vienna, but loved to pass long periods of time on holiday in Italy. His son Maurizio, specialized in art and Renaissance literature, married an Italian girl, noted for her beauty during that epoch, and they came to reside permanently in Tuscany. Maurizio's son, Massimo, developed the agricultural property, and directed its growth and specific production to quality viticulture and oil. Today, the Farm of Sammonatana, directed by Count Andrea, Massimo' son, is comprised of nearly 35 hectares of specialized vineyards and more than 4.000 olive trees.
