Castello San Donato

There are places which, owing to a series of favorable factors, symbolically become the epitome of larger areas, as it is precisely in those places that everyday events are turned into history.
The Castle San Donato in Perano is one of these places: it overlooks the gentle rolling hills of Tuscany, a region famous worldwide because of the evocative beauty of its landscape and the excellent quality of its wine: Chianti.

Around the year 1000, this small hhttp://www.castellosandonato.it/images/SdP_cab.jpgamlet was fortified and incorporated in the network of medieval Chianti castles. Up until this point, the hamlet had developed for a few centuries around a chapel dedicated to San Donato- the Bishop of Arezzo, martyred by the pagans in the 4th century A.D., who is believed to have miraculously recomposed a glass chalice.

Towards the middle of the 15th century this ancient village, twice surrounded by defensive walls according to the custom of the time, became a wealthy landlord's country residence. Purchased then in the mid 16th century by the Strozzi family, San Donato remained in their ownership for as long as four centuries.
The Strozzi were one of the most renowned families from Florence, at the time engaged in establishing an economic structure which could guarantee a profit to their agricultural property and solidity to their political power and social prestige.

Nowadays San Donato in Perano represents the cutting edge in agricultural management through the harvesting of specialized crops, from which a new idea of agriculture originates, which is capable of combining the traditional vocation for wine and olive oil of the area with a sophisticated conception of hospitality.
